Snazzy Folk Going Places

I am excited to announce the secret theme for our wedding (at least for now, until I change my mind 100 times): Snazzy Folk Going Places. It doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, and it's pretty ridiculous, but I am quite pleased!

I say secret theme because John says we're not supposed to tell people. Like that was going to happen.

We decided on this theme last night on our flight home from Boston. We made a list of things that we collectively like, and then started to think about how we could incorporate the most important ones into the wedding. And wa-la, Snazzy Folk Going Places was born.

"snazzy", I think, gets at an appropriate mix of sharp-dressed, good-humored, ready for a good time, a little flashy, a little silly, and a little old timey. Fun that's fun, in your Sunday best.

"folk" because there will be goats.

And yes, Going Places means we get to have nerdy transportation references.

Exhale : )

Wow, apparently writing that first post was very cathartic for me. I've been so much more relaxed since then! I also think it has to do with getting through some of the first major hurdles. To sum up the last month: omg we're going to get engaged omg we're going to get engaged like NOW! Omg we're engaged!! Omg we need to plan a wedding. Omg I want to get married next spring so we better figure this shiz out. Ok parents are cool and helping with $$. Omg there are a zillion choices to make. I like gray and coral. No, gray and orange. Oh crap, parents are no longer cool -- suddenly I feel like I'm 13 again. Oh crap, what do I think about religion?? Google religious stuff. Look how pretty peach and coral are! Spend hours writing a very short email to retired priest i like. Oh crap, there are a zillion venues but none of them are perfect. I think I like gray and coral. Salmon? Sigh, false information gets everyone upset! Don't forget to work around Timmy's graduation events. Hey look! This looks like a nice venue. hey look, they have goats! And an owl! Oh nice, priest will be cool and church is available. Excellent, venue is available on the only date the works! This might actually work! Exhale. Hey, check out all these other great things not related to weddings, like parks and bikes and cooking and exercising and gardening and shopping.
That about brings me up to now.

So, nothing is officially locked in, but I think it's going to go down something like this:
May 19, 2012
Church ceremony, maybe outside at my family's church or maybe inside the really awkward "meeting space" where mass is held (I prefer ugly 1960s architecture with hippie intentions to beautiful, stuffy churches) probably around 3pm
Cocktails and reception at the howard county conservancy around 5
Maybe there will be an awesome Americana band for outdoor cocktails in the garden. Maybe there will be hula hooping during said cocktail hour.
Reception inside, with view of the owl. I like the idea of centerpieces with herbs and flowers.
Possibly a late evening snow ball.
Hopefully rockin the booty shaker until everyone is sweaty and exhausted.

I think this is an excellent start!

Possible reception spot

I think this where our reception will be. It's next to the snowball stand. How awesome is that? I meet with the lady from there Friday morning. Hopefully no deal breaker surprises.

Welcome to my blogosphere

Occasionally I come up with a great idea for a blog. Some crucial perspective the inter webs are lacking that will, upon execution, make me an Internet sensation and also lots of money. This usually happens in the evening, after a long day at work and a few glasses of wine. Then, a TLC marathon distracts me (I'm looking at you Little People Big World) and/or I fall asleep on the couch. End of story. By morning I'm thinking clearly again about how much I have zero interest in spending my free time trying to be clever enough to compete with ShitMyDadSays. Plus, I need to save my jokes for real life. I just moved to a new city, and I need to impress real people. Not Internet people. So, therein lies the story of my life, unblogged.

At least until now. I now have something so exciting, so exhilarating, so rife with controversy, that it must be shared. Yes, I'm talking about planning my wedding. I wouldn't have imagined myself someone to go off the deep end with this, but in the three weeks since John slid this sparkly ring on my chubby little finger, I've been fairly obsessed with wedding planning. I could try to rationalize, but it's really quite embarrassing. I have three New York Times Sunday papers virtually untouched on the kitchen table, I have been locked out of my online banking system for months (ok, this isn't engagement related), and yet I am burning through phone and computer batteries exhausting google image search for all things wedding.

I hope that this is just a phase. I mean, I'm excited to be engaged and excited to plan a wedding, but, wow, I need to step down a bit. Think of all the TLC I'm missing.

So, I've decided to try out this blog as place where I can obsess, unabashedly, about wedding planning, and then hopefully get it out, get my thoughts organized, and then get back to important endeavors like evening bike rides and Facebook stalking.

And I left out one important part. You ladies with whom I'm sharing this admission of guilt and self-centeredness: I want to know what you think! Just imagine we're all sitting in the living room at 1705 drinking schnapsy Kates and passing magazines around. Don't worry, most posts won't be this long. I mostly want to share pictures and ideas and the occasional frustration. Actually, I'd say there's a fifty-fifty chance I won't remember the password and this will be my only post.
